The Hum
Over the last several months, I have been occasionally hearing this strange hum early in the morning and late at night. Sometimes I wake up and my body feels like it is vibrating. The hum can best be described as a pulsating, rhythmic, low frequency sound that not everyone is able to hear. I first noticed the hum when I woke up from sleeping in our guest bedroom in the basement. The sound seemed to be coming from beneath the ground, but I could not figure out exactly where it was coming from. I do not hear it all the time, but when I do, it causes me to become a bit anxious and uneasy, because it actually vibrates my eardrums. I did a little research on the hum and found out that it is a worldwide phenomenon, but only about 2 percent of people actually hear it. There are videos and audio recordings of this strange sound coming from the earth’s core. The hum is attributed to several different natural and manmade causes, but I wonder if the earth is groaning.
One morning I woke up hearing the humming sound, so I went outside to see what it was, but I could not hear anything outside. At first you think it might be a form of low frequency tinnitus, but the sound appeared to be coming from an external source, not an internal one. Although sometimes this can be hard to differentiate. Then I started thinking, could this be the earth groaning and am I also groaning with it?
For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. (Romans 8:22).
And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; (Genesis 3:17)
And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.” (Luke 19:39-40)
Birth Pangs
So, what does it mean that all of creation groans? The groaning the Bible describes is likened to the groans a woman has before she is going to give birth. Is the earth going to give birth? Why yes, a matter of fact the earth is awaiting for the revealing of the sons and daughters of the Lord to be given their glorified bodies, at which point the body becomes free from the cumbersome burdens of sin and death. Consider Romans 8:18-23 (Amplified) :
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time (this present life) are not worth being compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us and for us and conferred on us!
For [even the whole] creation (all nature) waits expectantly and longs earnestly for God’s sons to be made known [waits for the revealing, the disclosing of their sonship].
For the creation (nature) was subjected to frailty (to futility, condemned to frustration), not because of some intentional fault on its part, but by the will of Him Who so subjected it—[yet] with the hope
That nature (creation) itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and corruption [and gain an entrance] into the glorious freedom of God’s children.
We know that the whole creation [of irrational creatures] has been moaning together in the pains of labor until now.
And not only the creation, but we ourselves too, who have and enjoy the firstfruits of the [Holy] Spirit [a foretaste of the blissful things to come] groan inwardly as we wait for the redemption of our bodies [from sensuality and the grave, which will reveal] our adoption (our manifestation as God’s sons).
With all of the chaos in the world right now and the increase of technology, this also puts stress on the earth. Stress for example: burying fiber optic broadband lines, 5G frequencies, underground power lines, wind turbines, nuclear powerplants and cell phone towers just to mention a few. Think about all those low frequencies and radiation being dispersed into the atmosphere and causing problems in the earth and in our physical bodies. Just do a simple google search on how low frequencies negatively affect the human body. What about all those forest fires in California, certainly the earth, nature, and the animals must be groaning.
Signs of the Time
The year 2020 has been a shock to humanity, in that with Covid-19, riots, violence, fires, and division we find ourselves isolated and often times fearful. We ourselves groan, waiting for a time of freedom and deliverance from all of these manmade and natural disasters. The times we are living in are unprecedented, historic, and troubling. But the Bible says these trials and tribulations cannot compare to the glory that is going to be revealed in us and to us.
I believe this is the beginning of birth pangs, that Scripture describes in Matthew 24:3-13:
While He was seated on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately and said, Tell us, when will this take place, and what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end (the completion, the consummation) of the age?
Jesus answered them, Be careful that no one misleads you [deceiving you and leading you into error].
For many will come in (on the strength of) My name appropriating the name which belongs to Me], saying, I am the Christ (the Messiah), and they will lead many astray.
And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not frightened or troubled, for this must take place, but the end is not yet.
For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in place after place;
All this is but the beginning [the early pains] of the birth pangs [of the intolerable anguish].
Then they will hand you over to suffer affliction and tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake.
And then many will be offended and repelled and will begin to distrust and desert [Him Whom they ought to trust and obey] and will stumble and fall away and betray one another and pursue one another with hatred.
And many false prophets will rise up and deceive and lead many into error.
And the love of the great body of people will grow cold because of the multiplied lawlessness and iniquity,
But he who endures to the end will be saved.
Great Tribulation
The groaning of the earth and all of creation is just the beginning of birth pangs of things that are about to come. It is an uncomfortable time and a time of anxiety for most of us. We can see that the world is going through some type of transformation and we are concerned. Matthew 24: 21-22 reads as follows:
For then there will be great tribulation (affliction, distress, and oppression) such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now—no, and never will be [again].
And if those days had not been shortened, no human being would endure and survive, but for the sake of the elect (God’s chosen ones) those days will be shortened.
So we are warned in the following Scripture:
If anyone says to you then, Behold, here is the Christ (the Messiah)! or, There He is!—do not believe it.
For false Christs and false prophets will arise, and they will show great signs and wonders so as to deceive and lead astray, if possible, even the elect (God’s chosen ones).
See, I have warned you beforehand.
So if they say to you, Behold, He is in the wilderness (desert)—do not go out there; if they tell you, Behold, He is in the secret places or inner rooms—do not believe it.
For just as the lightning flashes from the east and shines and is seen as far as the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
Although nobody knows the exact day and hour that the Lord Jesus is coming, we do have signs that are listed in the Scriptures that we should look out for. Consider Luke 21:25:
The Coming of the Son of Man
“And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves,
If the earth is groaning and we are seeing signs in the sun, moon, and stars, it is possible that we are getting closer to the Lord’s second coming. And for born-again believers that is exciting because we are promised this in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17:
For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
So be alert, be sober for the enemy roams about seeking whom he may devour. I believe we are living in the last days. The Gospel will be preached throughout the whole world and then the end will come, and a new beginning will start. But before any of that happens, there will be a great tribulation on earth, one of which we have never seen nor will we see again. I personally believe the church will be raptured before things get really bad, but we are experiencing the birth pangs right now. We may have to endure some persecution before the rapture, which we are also seeing now.
Is the earth groaning? I think it is and we are groaning with it. It is the beginning of birth pangs and we must be prepared for the things to come. If you are not a born-again believer, I would encourage you to ask the Lord Jesus Christ into your life. In your own words, just ask Him to come into your heart. The Bible says for whosoever calls upon his name shall be saved. The time is drawing short and I truly do believe the earth is groaning.
